PLANS to transform derelict gasworks in Southampton into 400 homes have been welcomed.

Developer Hawkstone Properties Ltd wants to demolish the two landmark structures in Britannia Road to make way for 403 new flats.

The plans propose 166 one-bed flats and 237 two-bed flats,with shared spaces such as a library, a gym, a work/study space, and roof-top gardens spread between a 21-storey tower and three smaller blocks.

All of the flats would be for rental - and would not be available to buy.

A spokesperson for Hawkstone said the proposal has been "informed by extensive pre-application engagement" with Southampton City Council and stakeholders.

They described the plans as a "landmark development atthe gateway to the city centre".

The spokesperson added: "The scheme presents an exciting opportunity for Hawkstone Properties (Southampton) Ltd to be investing in Southampton to match the aspirations of SCC for Itchen Riverside."

The plans have been supported by one MP who said the development would be a "good use" of the empty site.

Southampton Itchen's Royston Smith said: "This is a very good use of a redundant site.

"Whilst I know some people would want the gas storage incorporated into any new development, and I would be supportive of that, we also know we have a shortage of homes in Southampton.

"This site is within easy walking distance of town, has excellent transport links and will help to make the case for re-using the Northam rail station for passengers.”

One resident, Kerry Richard, who lives in Northam and works in a local supermarket, said although she will miss the gas works, she looks forward to the redevelopment.

The 29-year-old said: "I think that this development could be nice but I will be sad to see [the gas works] go.

"It is a landmark for me. When I go past it I know I am almost home."

Toby Long, a 19-year-old student, said: "I think lots of people in the city think there are too many flats. But it's important to remember that everyone needs somewhere to live.

"I think it'll be good for this part of the city because it is a bit rundown in some parts and this would be a good breath of fresh air."
