£200m Town Quay Redevelopment Set for Approval

A £200 million transformation of Town Quay is set to move forward, with planning chiefs expected to approve a major redevelopment scheme featuring hundreds of homes, a luxury hotel with a rooftop helipad, and an expanded marina.

The ambitious project, proposed by the Nicholas James Group, includes a nine-storey hotel with 128 bedrooms and 18 serviced apartments, alongside a restaurant and conference facilities offering panoramic views of the city.

Key Features of the Redevelopment:

New Red Jet Terminal: A modern passenger terminal for the high-speed ferry service.

460 Residential Flats: Spread across four tower blocks.

Expanded Marina: Increasing berths from 100 to 300 to boost marine tourism.

Public Access Enhancements: Improved accessibility to the waterfront.

Car Parking: New parking facilities to support the development.

Pier Strengthening: Up to 850 piles will be used to reinforce the existing pier.

Planning Committee Review

Southampton City Council’s planning and rights of way panel is set to debate the application on March 4. While the council’s design team has raised concerns about increased traffic and a lack of public space near the Harbour Master’s House, a planning report recommends approval, subject to a Section 106 legal agreement.

The report highlights several key benefits of the development:

“This proposal represents a genuine opportunity to enhance the character of the city centre waterfront. The extensive public realm improvements, job creation, and significant housing provision make it a highly beneficial scheme for Southampton.”
